China's New Voices: Popular Music, Ethnicity, Gender, and Politics, 1978-1997 by Nimrod Baranovitch,
This is the most comprehensive study to date of the rich popular music scene in contemporary China. Focusing on the city of Beijing and drawing upon extensive fieldwork, "China's New Voices "shows that during the 1980s and 1990s, rock and pop music, combined with new technologies and the new market economy, have enabled marginalized groups to achieve a new public voice that is often independent of the state. Nimrod Baranovitch analyzes this phenomenon by focusing on three important contexts: ethnicity, gender, and state politics. His study is a fascinating look at the relationship between popular music in China and broad cultural, social, and political changes that are taking place there. Baranovitch's sources include formal interviews and conversations conducted with some of China's most prominent rock and pop musicians and music critics, with ordinary people who provide lay perspectives on popular music culture, and with others involved in the music industry and in academia. Baranovitch also observed recording sessions, concerts, and dance parties, and draws upon TV broadcasts and many publications in Chinese about popular music.

Singing a New Tune: The Rebirth of the Modern Film Musical from Evita to de-Lovely and Beyond
Critics the world over have often loudly lamented that the movie musical is a dead art form. However, while it is true that the musical no longer occupies the cherished place of prominence in American cinema that it once did, the old razzle-dazzle has had a comeback. Author and film expert John Kenneth Muir faces the music in Singing a New Tune, a rollicking study that traces the rebirth of the film musical from the dark days of the early 1990s - when all the musical numbers were cut from the film I'll Do Anything due to preview audience hostility - to the current heyday of Moulin Rouge, Chicago (Academy Award winner for Best Picture 2002), and Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera. Examining over a dozen musical films from the last decade, Muir explains how first-class artists have marshaled everything from spectacle (Evita) to humor (South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut); tragedy (Dancer in the Dark) to Shakespeare (Love's Labour's Lost); and even psychology and sexuality.

1990s music groups - In the 1990s, music had gone through the rap and house revolution, totally changing the landscape of music. While up to the 1980s, music seemed to get louder and louder, the 1990s music seemed to take a step back in rhythm, going from the aforementioned Rap revolution, to the slower, romantic lyrics of late '90s bands, while also witnessing a rise in alternative rock, and a couple of attempts at bringing back 80's style of pop.

1990s in music (UK) - This is a summary of music in the United Kingdom during the decade of the 1990s.

Music of the United Kingdom (1990s-present) - In the early 1990s, American alternative rock bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam became mainstream in the US and helped inspire the British alternative rock scene. By the middle of the decade, the British charts were dominated by Britrock, a melding of British rock and roll forms from the last thirty years.

Music of the United Kingdom (1990s) - In the 1990's various different styles of music exploded onto the scene.
